Nestled in the heart of the Dolomites, Alpe di Siusi, also known as Seiser Alm, is Europe’s largest high-altitude alpine meadow. Spanning 56 square kilometres at elevations ranging from 1,680 to 2,350 metres, this plateau offers a pristine natural setting. Its location above the villages of Castelrotto, Siusi allo Sciliar, and Fiè allo Sciliar makes it a central feature of the Dolomites Guided Traverse with Salamander Adventures. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is celebrated for its ecological diversity and cultural significance.
Alpe di Siusi is home to over 790 plant species, with vibrant wildflowers flourishing during the summer months. The area is interspersed with traditional alpine huts, or “Schwaige,” offering visitors local delicacies and a glimpse into regional traditions. In winter, it transforms into a popular skiing destination with 63 kilometres of slopes and 80 kilometres of cross-country ski tracks. Its high-altitude pastures and sweeping vistas of limestone peaks are a visual testament to the Dolomites’ geological grandeur.
Trekkers encounter Alpe di Siusi via trails offering panoramic views of jagged mountain ranges, peaceful meadows, and open skies. The trails are well-marked, accessible via cable cars, and allow for exploration of the plateau’s diverse terrain. Opportunities abound to pause at huts for refreshments and experience the interplay of nature and culture that defines this region.
