Water Availability on the Pyrenees Traverse

Reliable Sources of Water

During the Pyrenees Traverse (GR10 and GR11), water availability is generally dependable, with ample opportunities to refill your bottles along the trail. Throughout the trek, you will find public water taps, fountains, and springs in villages and near refuges. Many of these taps and fountains provide potable water, particularly in the French and Spanish sections of the trail. Ensure to verify signs or consult your guide to confirm water potability.

Safe Drinking Practices

Tap water across Europe, including France and Spain, is typically safe to drink. You can confidently refill from taps and designated fountains without requiring additional filtration. However, as a sustainable practice, Salamander Adventures discourages the purchase of single-use plastic bottled water. Instead, we recommend carrying refillable water bottles or using eco-friendly filtration systems such as Water-to-Go bottles or portable water filters.

Alternative Water Sources

If you intend to drink directly from natural sources like streams or mountain springs, use a filtration system to ensure safety, especially in areas with livestock or agricultural activity. While many mountain streams offer clean water, filtration eliminates potential risks from bacteria or contaminants.

Planning and Hydration Tips

  • Carry Enough Water: Plan your refills ahead by consulting with your guide or using maps that mark water points.
  • Hydration Gear: Use hydration bladders or bottles that are easy to access during your trek.
  • Backup Options: Carry water purification tablets as a backup if you encounter unexpected situations where treated water is unavailable.

Sustainability and the Environment

Practise Leave No Trace principles. Avoid using soaps or detergents near natural water sources and ensure you leave the environment as pristine as you found it. By adhering to these guidelines, you not only ensure personal safety but also contribute to the conservation of the beautiful Pyrenees landscape.
