Essential Information . . .

This trip should appeal to you if you regularly take walking weekends and are happy covering 16-22km (10-14 miles) each day, with a number of ascents and descents. On the TMB we normally walk for between 6 and 8 hours each day and be outdoors for 8 or 9 hours. We generally follow good paths that are well-travelled, but they are not maintained by a park authority. You will encounter uneven paths, rocky steps, rocks underfoot and occasional tree roots on the trail. The highest altitude we walk to is 2537 metres, so you should not feel the altitude apart from a little shortness of breath. In late June and early July we may encounter patches of snow, particularly at the cols, and may have to kick steps to make the path secure. You will be in twin-bedded rooms throughout, though occasionally there may be more than two in a room at the auberges at Trient and Les Chapieux.

  • Essential Information

Is it for me?

The guided Tour du Mont Blanc trek is ideal for fit hikers looking for comfortable accommodation and luggage transfers. To enjoy the trek you should be able to:
  • Hike 6-8 hours per day, for multiple days in a row
  • Cover daily distances of 15-20km
  • Ascend/descend 800-1200m per day
  • Carry a daypack with your picnic and spare clothes. 3-5kg
  • hike confidently along the occasional section of rocky and uneven mountain path

Regular training in the hills with your fully loaded daypack in the months prior to your trip is the best preparation. It is a challenging, multi-day trek and you need to be confident of your fitness to enjoy it.

Our clients are a nice mix of solo travellers, couples and friends. Most are between 40-70 years old, though we do have a few younger members.

If you have any questions about whether this trek is right for you, please contact us. We have years of experience on the TMB and can help you decide.

We grade this trip: 3 - Challenging

The Tour du Mont Blanc is a serious mountain trek with long hiking days and significant elevation changes. It requires good fitness and previous trekking experience is preferable.

Days are typically 6-8 hours on the trail, with daily ascents/descents of 800-1500m. You'll cover 15-22km per day, hiking at altitudes between 1000-2600m. The terrain is varied, ranging from well-travelled trails to rocky paths and the occasional exposed tree route. There is one short ladder section, approx 15 feet, that can be avoided if you don't like using the ladder.

While you only need to carry a daypack, there are 2 nights (days 5 and 8) without your main luggage so you'll need to carry your overnight essentials: spare underwear, socks, T-shirt and a few toiletries.

Why we go clockwise

We hike the classic TMB route in a clockwise direction from the Chamonix Valley for several reasons:
  • If you go anti-clockwise you cross three huge mountain passes in three days at the beginning of the trip: this means a lot of physical effort when you are just finding your trekking feet and getting used to the higher altitudes.
  • In addition, our hotel owners report that many hikers are anxious about being able to cross these passes – particularly between Les Contamines and Les Chapieux – and the atmosphere at the hotels is tense.
  • By travelling clockwise, the first few days of the trek are easier and you get fitter and acclimatised without the stress. It means that crossing the big passes on the last three days are much more enjoyable..

Price and what it includes

The guided Tour du Mont Blanc trek price includes:

There are ATMs in Chamonix, Les Houches, Argentiere and Courmayeur to withdraw Euros. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels and shops. It's a good idea to carry some cash (around €100-150).

Clothing and equipment

Having the right gear is critical for your enjoyment on the TMB. The essentials include:
  • Comfortable, sturdy and broken-in hiking boots
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers (Gore-Tex or similar breathable, seam-sealed fabric). A 'pac-a-mac' is not good enough

  • Sleepwear and toiletries
  • Cash and credit/ATM card
  • Extra camera batteries and memory cards
A complete suggested packing list is provided upon booking your trek. Your guide will do a pack check before setting off and can offer advice on gear. Most technical items like trekking poles are available for rent or purchase at outdoor shops in the Chamonix Valley if needed.

Group size

Our TMB treks have a maximum group size of 14 participants, with most groups averaging 8-12 people. This small group size allows for:
  • Personal attention and support from your guide
  • Getting to know your fellow trekkers and making new friends
The minimum group size is 6 participants. In the unlikely event that the minimum is not reached, we will transfer you to a different TMB date or refund you in full.

Transport during the tour

All transportation during your TMB is included in the tour price. This comprises:
  • Buses or trains at the beginning and end of some hiking days
  • Cable cars as outlined in the itinerary
  • Baggage transfers between accommodations (see more below)
Any transport to and from the Chamonix Valley at the start and end of your trip is not included. It is easy for you to arrange these transfers and we will advise how to do this.

Luggage transfers

One of the biggest conveniences on our guided TMB is having your main luggage transferred between hotels on all but 2 nights, so you only need to hike with a medium-sized daypack.

Every morning, you'll leave your main bag at the hotel reception with a luggage tag we provide you. The bags are picked up and transferred in a van to your next accommodation.

You will not have access to your main luggage on night 5 and 8. You just need to pack a few overnight essentials (toiletries, change of underwear, socks and T shirt).

Luggage is limited to 1 bag per person, with a maximum weight of 15kg (33lbs). Please bring soft luggage like sports bags or backpacks. Bags should be clearly labeled with your name.

We highly recommend you do not pack any valuables (laptops, money etc) in your transferred luggage in the unlikely event of damage or theft. Luggage is generally transferred to each hotel's reception area. Keep your passport, wallet, phone, camera, and any medications with you in your daypack. Your main bag will not be accessible during the day.

Our Staff

Your TMB is led by a qualified hiking guide who is passionate about the mountains. All our guides are:
  • Certified International Mountain Leaders (IMLs)
  • First Aid responders
  • English speakers (many are multilingual)
  • Experienced in the Alps and on the TMB
  • Knowledgeable in local nature, culture and history
  • Fun, friendly, professional
In addition to your guide, we have a logistical support team. This includes our reservations team, luggage transfer drivers and the hotels.

  • Flights or transport to and from the Chamonix Valley (the trip start/end point)
  • Two dinners in Courmayeur
  • Alcoholic and soft drinks; tea, coffee etc
  • Lunch and snacks

  • Tips for your guide (optional but always appreciated)

Getting to the Chamonix Valley

Geneva International Airport (GVA) is the most convenient access point for the Chamonix Valley. Several airlines offer direct flights from major European, US and UK cities. The airport has a Swiss and French side - the Swiss side is where you get transport to travel to Chamonix. From the airport, it takes about 1 hour to reach Les Houches or Chamonix by road. Your options include:
  • Shared shuttle: The most economical option. Services like Mountain Drop-Offs and Chamexpress have regular departures all day and drop you at your hotel. 75 minutes journey. Book in advance. Cost is €50 per person each way.
  • Private taxi: Can book in advance or take a taxi from the Chamonix Valley stand outside arrivals. Cost is around €300 each way.
  • Rental car: All major agencies have offices at GVA airport. You can leave your car at the hotel for no extra charge when trekking
  • Train: Train is possible, but can take up to 4 hours from Geneva Airport.

Passports, visas & entry requirements

  • Passports: A passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended stay is required to enter France, Italy and Switzerland.
  • Visas: Requirements vary considerably based on your nationality and country of residence. Currently, US, Canadian, UK, EU, Australian and New Zealand citizens do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. It is your responsibility to get up to date information for visa and entry rules for the Schengen zone.
  • Customs: There are no customs checks when crossing between countries on the trail.

It is your responsibility to check your specific passport, visa and entry requirements and ensure you have the necessary documents for all countries on the trek. Regulations can change, so review the rules before you travel.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all our treks. Your policy should cover:
  • Trip cancellation/interruption
  • Flight delays or cancellations
  • Overseas medical expenses
  • Medical evacuation
  • Emergency assistance
  • Lost or delayed baggage
  • Repatriation to your home country
  • Guided trekking in the Alps

You should bring a copy of your insurance policy with emergency contact numbers. Leave a copy with someone back home.

Weather

The summer hiking season in the Mont Blanc region runs from mid-June through mid-September. During this time, weather conditions are generally favourable for trekking, with warm and sometimes hot days. However, as with all mountain ranges it can rain - either as frontal weather or as thunderstorms after a hot day - and you should come prepared for this.

  • Temperature: Expect daytime highs of 20-25°C (68-77°F) in the valleys and 10-15°C (50-59°F) at higher elevations. Night temperatures dip down to 5-10°C (41-50°F), feeling colder at altitude.

  • Precipitation: Summer is relatively dry, but afternoon thunderstorms are common, especially in late July and August. Always carry rain gear. Storm systems can sit over the mountains for a few days, bringing prolonged rain or even snow at the highest passes.
  • Wind: Breezes are common and can be chilly, especially at the passes and ridges. Prepare for strong gusts when weather fronts move through.
  • Sun: The sun is intense at altitude, even on cloudy days. Pack sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen).
  • Snow: The trail is usually snow-free by late June / early July. Snow patches can be navigated carefully with a trekking pole. There are occasions when wet weather brings snow at the highest passes during the summer. However, the heavy winter snow does not return until November.

It's essential to come prepared for a wide range of mountain weather, with layers that can be adjusted throughout the day.

Your guide will check the forecast daily and adjust the hiking plan if needed for safety and enjoyment.

Frequently Asked Questions. . .

Answers to common questions about the Guided Tour du Mont Blanc Trek, from packing tips to booking logistics.

How fit do I need to be for this trek?

The TMB is a challenging trek with long distances, significant elevation gains/losses, and some rugged terrain. You should have a very good level of cardio fitness and be comfortable hiking 6-8 hours per day for multiple days in a row. Train by doing hilly hikes of similar duration with a loaded backpack in the months leading up to your trip.

What type of boots and other gear do I need?

Supportive, ankle-high hiking boots with sturdy Vibram-type soles are essential. Your boots should be well broken-in and waterproof. Trail or approach shoes are fine so long as it is dry or you are not on snow - they are pretty useless when wet. Other key gear includes trekking poles, a 35-40L backpack, rain jacket and pants, warm layers, hat and gloves, water bottles or hydration reservoir, and personal first-aid kit. We provide a packing list upon booking.

How much weight will I carry?

Thanks to luggage transfers, you'll carry just a moderate daypack on most days, with a rain jacket, warm layer, water, lunch, snacks, camera, and personal items. On the 2 nights without luggage access (days 5 & 8), you'll add a few overnight essentials to your pack.

What kind of accommodations are used?

Our guided TMB uses a mix of comfortable 2-3 star hotels in twin rooms and simple auberges. Hotels have ensuite bathrooms while auberges have shared facilities. We choose accommodations for their location, cleanliness and friendly welcome to hikers.

Do I need to bring food?

All breakfasts and 8 dinners are provided. You will need to buy your own lunches. We recommend bringing your favourite energy bars and other snacks. Drinks, extra snacks and 2 dinners in Courmayeur are not included.

When is the best time for this trek?

The TMB season runs from mid-June to mid-September. August tends to be busiest, while June, July and September can be slightly quieter. June and early July is great for all the Alpine flowers, whilst September is slightly cooler with some autumnal colours.

June: Early season, with cooler temps and lingering snow on the higher passes. The mountains are a lush green and wildflowers start to carpet the meadows.

July: Warmer temps, long days, and the peak Alpine wildflower season. Trail conditions improve but some snow may remain at high elevations. The trail gets busier.

August: The most popular month for the TMB, with generally stable weather and snow-free trails. However, it can be quite hot in the valleys and afternoon storms are common.

September: Slightly cooler days and chillier nights: perfect hiking weather. Huts and hotels start to close towards the end of the month.

No matter when you trek, be prepared for unpredictable mountain weather and pack layers accordingly. It's not uncommon to experience sun, rain, wind, and even snow all in the same trek!
